England Counties at Stourton Park

Stourbridge RFC are celebrating after securing a deal to bring international rugby to the Black Country.

The club’s Stourton Park ground has been a base for England’s training sessions in the past but February will see it stage its first international when England Counties take on Irelands.

And with a number of the current Stourbridge squad involved in their national side last season, there could well be a strong Black Country presence involved in the clash on Friday 26th February.

Club chairman Dick Jeavons-Fellows said it was a great honour to be chosen to host the only England Counties clash on British soil this season.

He said: “We have always been great supporters of both the England Counties XV and the senior England side, so it is a great honour to be given this match.

“Our facilities are the best in the Midlands outside the Guinness Premiership and we pride ourselves in bringing a professional approach to everything we do.

“The staging of such a high profile match will further enhance Stourbridge’s reputation as one of the leading rugby clubs in the West Midlands.”

Fly-half Duncan Hughes was the first Stourbridge player to represent England Counties when he lined up against France Amateurs in 2005.

Since then there have been a number of players involved, culminating in three of the current squad winning their caps last season. Scrum-half Tom Richardson flew the flag for the Stourton Park club on the Counties tour of Korea and Japan, while centre Adam Billig and hooker Ben Gerry were also in the team for matches against the AIB Ireland Clubs XV and France Amateurs.
