Player of the Year awards
Post Match – The Promotion Finale.
With Otley already assured of promotion the five point win was required to give Stourbridge any hope of snatching the second promotion spot via a disaster for Manchester in their away game at Blackheath. As expected it was not to be, a convincing Manchester win ensured their promotion and resigned Stourbridge to third spot.
Nevertheless this season has seen their highest ever finish in the league system. Twenty one wins and five defeats brought a total 99 points, which in any other year would have secured promotion. They also finished 24 points and six wins ahead of fourth placed Blackheath.
Credit must go to Director of Rugby Neil Mitchell and his coaching staff for producing a squad capable of delivering some great performances, the highlight of which has to be doing the double over league winners Otley. The future looks bright for next season.
Post Match Awards.
A number of awards were made on the pitch following the game.
There have been some outstanding performers this season and everyone will have their own opinion of Player of the Season but surely none could argue with the choice of Ally Muldowney. Ally (along with (James Tideswell) has started every game this season and has been an immense second row presence.
Angie Newton presented the Faye Newton Memorial Award to a player who has always been in the thick of things this season, showing tremendous tenacity and determination. Again I am sure there can be no arguing with the choice in honouring our hooker, Ben Gerry.
On behalf of all within the club Neil Mitchell made a presentation to club doctor Malcolm Jones. The “Doc” was making his final appearance today after giving his time freely for the last 14 years.
Well deserved congratulations went to our excellent development squad (The Extras) who once again topped the Mertit Table in emphatic style. Thirteen wins, one narrow defeat, over 1,100 points scored, less than 300 against - quite a record and one that saw them top the table by a wide margin.
