Sunday 25th April Litchfield Festival

U11 Litchfield 10

Doing what I do for a living I am rarely short of superlatives but when putting my mind to the performance of our squad this weekend I find myself lost for words- well almost!

I think the Luctonians Tournament had subconsciously set the bar for the standard of performance that was required for us to succeed on the festival stage. In our first game we came out of the blocks with a real purpose, with our defensive line pushing up hard and fast putting The County Champions Burton under real pressure. We won the game deservedly 2 tries to nil. The dye was cast for the day ahead.

Terry, our resident pool referee commented ''craikey mite yower luds ar on fiya. ‘‘I said ''They certainly are Old Chap!''

The next 2 games were hard fought encounters which the lads slugged out to record 2 draws with 1 try a piece. The pool group was really tight but with 4 points we had done enough to win the pool and go on to the semis.

Here we met an on form Lichfield Tigers team who so often have been our achilles heel. On the day however, The Squad were undaunted and raised their game another notch to take a 2-0 win to the great delight of the Stourton Faithful. In the final we met a physically superior and highly charged outfit from Stafford. In a nutshell our lads played with real self belief and put on an outstanding display of attacking and defensive rugby in a blood and guts encounter which deservedly we one by an impressive 3 tries to 1.

Undoubtedly the day was won by an excellent all round squad performance with each of the 17 lads giving their very best. Some individuals do however deserve a mention: - Luke Penn demonstrated first class ball skills and put in a worthy skipper's performance. George Cattell distributed with accuracy and intelligence all afternoon. Niall Lones ran and tackled with real purpose and John Bailey in contact and with ball in hand was indefatigable. Will Allan executed a number of darting dashes to the try line and Sam Hughes was always effective in very limited space on the wing. Jacob Spilman was a talisman in the loose with a tireless work rate and as a coach credit should go to the joy that is Angus Guthrie who you know is never going to miss that crucial tackle. Although everyone played an important part in the win, the coaches chose one outstanding young man -Jonathon Jeffries as 'Player of The Tournament.' Jonathon not only rucked and mauled with ferocity but scored for me the best forward's try of the season.

The coaches were immensely proud of the whole squad and pleased that all 17 lads were able to contribute and savour a Tournament win. Thank-you once again to all the pitchside parents and supporters for their unfailing support on the day and throughout the season. Sunday was a great day of rugby, one we will remember and I hope draw inspiration from for a long time to come.

Looking forward to seeing you all for the End of Season Awards on 8th May- Details to follow.

Ps. I'm sure most of you will have done so already -if not, do check out the TP Photos website for some great action shots. Jonathon looks awesome, John looks fearsome, Angus looks wholesome, Will looks troublesome and Dave Mason looks hung -over!

Sunday 18th April Luctonians festival

u11 lucts

Bathed in glorious sunshine a number of our tournament stalwarts combined with a posse of first timers to the 'rugby festival' stage met this Sunday for the Luctonians Anglo Welsh Festival. Our first game was a baptism of fire against a really well drilled and very passionate Rwbina and I sensed the lads came out against Whitchurch slightly disheartened.

We lost that encounter also. I personally felt that we had it in us to beat them but didnt raise the passion in our game nor play as a cohesive team offering close support to the ball-carrier.

The third game was a different ball-game. Inspired by a highly charged 'Guthrie' pre-match pep talk the team came out full of fight and belief that they could see off an old adversary in the form of Malvern. I had been closely watching Malvern earlier in the day that were playing a much improved game and our deserved win this was an impressive scalp.

Our last pool game was against the hosts, Luctonians from whom great things had been expected. In a close fought game we simply wanted it more and as a spectacle from the touchline was thrilling. We won by a single try and entered the Plate competition facing Vardre in the semi finals. All the Welsh teams play with a passion and commitment that we should emulate every weekend we don the Blue and White of Stourbridge. Vardre were no exception but no-one on their side was a match for ' The Flying Machine ' that is Sam Hughes. Sam not only scored our try in match-time but then caught the kick off in extra time and untouched by a Welsh hand ran in the Golden Try that took us into a medal position in the Plate Final.

Weary legs and a really fired up Aberdare put paid to our progress and we ended up with no disgrace whatsoever as the Plate Runners Up. Great credit should go to those lads for whom this was their first Festival appearance. The Coaches Choice for 'Man of The Tournament ' was unanimously for Niall who tackled and rucked out of his skin all afternoon-well done. Also worthy of mention was George Cattell who kicked splendidly, John Bailey who ran hard and tackled without mercy, Jonathon Jefferies and Luka Rnic who foraged fiercely at the breakdown, Ewan and Sam's try saving tackling, Will Allan's darting ground gainers and last but by no means least Angus' stalwart contribution as Skipper.

Well done to all the players and many, many thanks to the Stourbridge Parent Faithful who were once again indomitable when it came to vocal support- The Welsh contingent have some way to go to match us on that score!

Looking forward to seeing you at Lichfield for the Season Finale.
