Web page update 27th April 2010

All of the players should be very proud of themselves for representing Stourbridge and performing so well over the season, and especially the last few weeks!

WELL DONE TO ALL OF THE STOURBRIDGE UNDER 8'S!!

SRFC Under 8's finished off a fantastic season with three tremendous tournaments. A victory in the Lichfield tournament on 25th April was well deserved, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole tournament. The previous week saw a narrow golden try defeat in the final at Luctonians after storming unbeaten through the group and semi-final stages, beating the eventual winners on the way, and a good performance at Sutton where the boys played some great tag rugby.

A super end to a great season!

Well done to the whole squad and thank you parents for your support during the season.

Don't forget Presentation Day on 9th May 2010.

Jan 2010 - Can players please now arrive for training and matches with a protective gumshield - Thanks

Further information will appear as soon as it becomes available, but for now training will continue throughout September on Sunday mornings at 10.30 and we expect our first fixture to take place in October.

2_Wins 1_Loss

An early season opener against local rivals DK was the first fixture for the U8s in 2009/10. A 2pm Saturday game was unusual, but in front of a large crowd on the First XV pitch at Stourton Park the U8s started the season well with a victory.

Three games were played:

A closely fought 5-4 opening victory

The second game saw DK run out 6-4 victors

In the final deciding game Stourbridge won 4-0.

Both teams then formed a guard of honour for the First XV and Cambridge, with Will Taylor as club mascot for the day.

Well done to all and thanks to DK for a really good opening fixture.

Try scorers: Rowan [5], Aiden [3], Ben M [2], James [2].

3_Wins

A smaller squad went to play at Hereford in the first official match of the season.

Three games were played.

A 5-3 victory in the opening fixture – some great running with a super try from Thomas G supporting a mazy run through the Hereford defence from Will Taylor, and running tries from Cameron, Henry and James.

A 6-3 victory in the second game – A super mazy run almost the length of the pitch and three times across it from Tomos J and Will A taking a pass on the run from Thomas G were the pick of the tries. A great run from Joe Edwards almost resulted in a try, the long grass just beating him. Three trademark, high speed, jinxing runs from James completed the rout.

A resounding 5-1 victory completed the series of matches, with another super run from Joe Edwards setting up a try for Thomas, with Cameron, Will A and Henry also on the scoresheet.

All three games saw ferocious tagging, with Iestyn on his debut right in the thick of it. Good support from Theo helped to turn over the ball after 6 tags on a number of occasions – well done Stour!

Try scorers : Tomos [1], Thomas G [5], James [4], Cameron [2], Henry [2], Will A [2]

Spirit of Rugby: Awarded to Tomos Jones who started the season a stronger and more confident player.

With a squad of 20 for Stour and 18 for the Carolians, the two teams split into two to play two games each.

Team-A: Ben M, Sam, Max, Rowan, Jude, Ted, Aiden, Joe S, Laurie, Ben H

Match 1- The first match starts with Kiddy on the attack, but some good solid tagging from Jude, Joe S and Ben M saw Kiddy spill the ball. Ben M pounced on the ball and then powered down the wing for the 1st try. More good tagging from Ben H, Aiden, Joe S saw the ball mishandled to Rowan who made a good run then a fantastic lay off to Ben M in support for the 2nd try. The Jude and Joe S tag team kept Kiddy at bay until they were just able to sneak in down the wing for their 1st score. Ben M and Jude turn the ball over again through good tagging, Rowan then picks it up and he’s off for another try. Ben H picks up another loose ball runs and passes to Ben M clear through for his 3rd. Straight from the off Max gets the ball and attacks, a few changes of direction sees him straight through to score. Joe S and Ben M tag but Kiddy push on for a score in the corner. Great SRFC tagging pays dividends Ben M, Sam, Ted, Joe, Laurie lead to our first 6 tag turnover. Aiden drives forward on a fantastic run then passes to the ever in-support Ben M for his 4th try. Kiddy regroup and manage to sneak down the outside for a 3rd try. Ben H then passes off to Ted who passes to Rowan who goes on a sensational run to score. Stour then defend hard and a great steal and solo run from Rowan sees him and Stour home comfortably.

Score SRFC 8 – Kiddy 3

Match 2

Stour attack with passes from Ted to Ben H and then to Rowan, who with a quick change of pace opens the scoring. Kiddy then fumble and Rowan’s off on another great run and try. Ben and Jude get some tags but some good passing see Kiddy score in the corner. Kiddy attack but Jude, Aiden and Rowan tag away but Kiddy somehow manage to score. Aiden starts off with some good running a good pass to Rowan and he’s through again to score. Some good tagging and a loose ball see’s Max on a good run with a good pass to Ted who’s over for another try. Ben M picks up a loose ball passes to Rowan and he scores. Ben M to Jude lays off to Rowan who goes on a great run for his 4th try. Some loose handling lets Kiddy steal a try. Stour attack but Kiddy get the ball then Ben M, Joe, Ben H, Rowan, Jude, Ben M again tag like its going out of fashion and gain the ball back. Kiddy manage a late break and try but all in vain, the whistle goes.

Score SRFC 5 – Kiddy 4

Tries - Ben M [4], Rowan [7], Max [1] and Ted [1]

Spirit of Rugby: Awarded to Jude Evans who on his debut for Stourbridge put in a fantastic defensive effort and supported well in attack

Overall the training from the week before paid massive results. Tagging and quick short accurate passing were good to see and proved invaluable.

Team-B: Iestyn, James, Tomos, Henry, George, Will A, Will T, Thomas, Cameron, Theo.

Game 1 saw a hard fought 4-3 victory. With 9 in each team and a narrow pitch, space was hard to find for both sides. Scoring took a long time to come, but eventually came from Will A. Tomos J again produced a mazy run to score from nowhere. Tagging was relentless from everywhere on the park, although some of the Stour players were over eager and found themselves penalised for offside and short passes – an area to improve on on the training ground.

Game 2 was a much easier game, with tagging again turning over ball a number of times despite a lot of off sides. Tries were almost unopposed until right at the end with the final score 6-1 to Stour.

Tries: Thomas [4], Will A [4], James [1], Tomos [1]

Spirit of Rugby: Awarded to Will Adams who was tenacious in defence and did not stop working hard throughout both of the games.

Well Done Stour!

Chaddesley Corbett

A

The players who attended and played are detailed below into the groups they were split

Max Clement; Joe Edwards; Joe Surch; Cameron; Aidan G.B; Ted Morgan; Laurie Murphy

Chaddesley fielded a mixed group of players of U7’s and U8’s together with 2 coaches. It was decided that the best ploy would be to split the Stour lads between the Chaddesley numbers so everyone got a good run out. All of the lads warmed up together and everyone mixed well.

As the teams were at least 10 or 11 a side on a small pitch the play was very congested and stop start. The younger CCRFC players were not completely up to speed on the rules but non the less they listened and learned as the game progressed. The Stour players were a credit to themselves and the club by helping the CCRFC players and keeping them involved in the play. The was some very good ball passing play particularly from Stour which on more than a few occasion led to Aidan taking the ball and running down the flanks to run in some very good try’s. The overall tagging from the Stour team was so much better than CCRFC and as the teams were mixed it made it easy to see that the work our coaches have been putting in was clear to all as our players stood out from the Chaddesley lads with their distribution, handling, calling for the ball and all round contribution. As it turns out the day was enjoyed by all and judging by the comments of the Chaddesley supporters and club members after in the club house Stourbridge came away with a resounding vote of thanks for our help and support on the day.

There was no point in keeping score on the day but for the record our try scorer’s were

Tries: Aidan [8], Ted [3], Laurie [1], Joe Edwards [3], Cameron [1]

Cheltenham was cancelled so only half the squad played at DK.

Dudley Kingswinford

On another bitterly cold, damp day following rain the pitches were extremely muddy for this local encounter against DK - our second outing against them this year.

Again, with large numbers thanks to the great support from parents, the squads were split into two equally matched teams.

Team

Will A, Joe E, Thomas G, Alex, Ben H, Iestyn, Cameron, Theo, Joe S, James

In a very undisciplined game [unusual for the Stour boys] the ball was dropped, knocked on, and ran into touch on far too many occasions. A scrappy first half saw scores unbelievably at 0-0 [the first time ever]. This was however also as a result of disallowed diving tries and a few stoppages for injuries as the cold and mud took its toll. Second half saw an improvement, and lead by captain Iestyn [a reward for October 'Trainer of the Month'], Stour ran in 6 tries [3 from Will A, 2 from Thomas G and 1 from James] with only 2 from DK. Final score 6-2 victory

The second match was closer, mainly due to some poor defending from Stour, but still resulted in a 8-6 victory, with tries from Will A [3], Thomas G [4] Joe E and Alex. It was great to see scores from outside the usual players, just showing the strength of the squad.

A third game saw a narrow 3-2 victory, with another try from Joe E, supported by Thomas and James

Tries : Thomas G [7], Will A [5], Joe E [2], James [2] and Alex

Worcester Warriors

A hastily arranged fixture on the coldest day of the year so far did not stop Stourbridge parents pulling out all of the stops to get players to the impressive Sixways Stadium, Worcester. This was our first visit to the home of Premier opposition, Worcester, although w had played them last year. Two large squads were divided evenly into two, and the games commenced.

Team 1

Sam, Jude, George, Thomas G, Aiden, Laurie, Cameron, Will T

Two games were played, with two victories.

The first was a 6-4 win with tries from Thomas [4], Aiden and George, who showed a fantastic turn of pace.

The second was a narrow 5-4 victory. George was captain for the game, and tries were from Thomas [4] and Aiden

Team 2

Rowan, Joe E, Tomos J, Ben M, Fin M, Ted, Iestyn, Joe S, James

Two games played.

Game 1 SRFC 9 – WRFC 7

Ted scores the first of the day with a good solo run. Stour defend with Joe S taking a tag and getting back to tag again resulting in turnover ball to SRFC. Ben goes on a run passes to Iestyn who gets the ball out to James who goes on a great run to score. Some solid tagging from Ben in the middle of the park holds WRFC back but they manage to offload down the wing to score. WRFC defence is holding strong and stopping Stour advancing to much. Joe S goes on a good run passes to Rowan who goes clear through to the line to score. Ben again tagging strong in the middle leads to a spilled ball by WRFC, Ben picks it up passes to Fin who passes back to Ben to Joe S out to James who goes on a good weaving run to score. HT. Some very tight play from both teams in the middle of the pitch is broken when Ben gets the ball and shows a clean pair of heels to WRFC to score. Stour not tagging enough is starting to cost as WRFC score 2 unanswered . From the off Stour start a good passing move which sees Joe S through to score. Again WRFC attack and just on the 6th tag manage to find a way through to score. Stour have started to defend better and attack even stronger with James scoring 2 in a row after good all round team work. Some of the best defending of the day sees Joe, Ben, Rowan, Joe, Rowan, Rowan, Joe tag for a T/O ball which sees Finley go over for the deciding try.

Game 2. SRFC 7 – WRFC 4

The game starts with Rowan going straight from the pass off to score. Some good defending holds WRFC back but they manage to steal ground to get back in the game. Its a bit to and fro with Rowan scoring twice with two good weaving trademark runs and WRFC managing to reply every time. Stour defence for the first time showing a few holes which WRFC find to take the lead. This has woken us up. Joe goes on a run and a good pass to Finlay sees him score to square things up. Plenty of chasing and tagging especially from Rowan presses Worcs back and leads to a T/O ball and sees Rowan through to score again. Stour hand the ball back with some loose handling but still the defence holds strong Ben and Joe tagging well hold back Worcs and sees Stour pick up the ball after some good WRFC tagging the balls gets out to Rowan to score and extend the lead. Turnover ball to Stour leads to a good flowing passing movement to see James score the last try of the game.

Two further matches were played, with both teams agreeing to play a 'first VII' against each other, and a further game.

SRFC 6 – WRFC 7

This game sees the teams mixed up after the first 2 games.

Stour start the game and Tom goes straight from the off to score a good solo try. Some good Stour handling and running especially from Iestyn push Worcs back. Laurie goes on a good run passes to Jude to Joe E then to Joe S who goes over for the try. The play is getting stuck to the middle of the pitch with good defensive work from Worcs but Joe S gets the ball and goes on a great weaving run to score again. Some poor handling and defensive work from Stour see Worcs take the half time lead going in 5-3 up.

The second half starts with both teams playing with 6 players due to an injury to a Worcester player. Worcs attack with a good running play but our defence has tightened up and we peg them back and get an offside T/O. The ball out to Joe E who takes them all on to score a good try. Some more good defensive work from Worcs sees them break away after a T/O to score and extend the lead. Ted is tagging well in middle and manages to get the ball out to Will T to go on a run pass to Jude to score. Worcs score straight from the kick off to go 7-5 in front. Stour take it on the chin with Laurie putting in some good running down the flanks but WRFC defend well to hold us back. We manage to get the ball out to Tom who goes on another great run in to the corner and finish the game as he started by scoring.

SRFC 4 – WRFC 2

A super 4-2 victory with tries from Rowan [3] and Thomas.

Tries: Thomas G [9], Rowan [9], Aiden [2], George [1], Ted [1] James [5], Ben M [1], Joe S [3], Finley [2], Tomos J [2], Joe E [1], Jude [1]

Old Sils

4 wins

Old Sils

A home game against Old Sils proved to be one of the biggest tests for the Stour squad this season, with a number of games played, but the score line not reflecting the quality of the opposition who did pose some serious questions to our young and talented squad.

We again managed to split the squad into two teams, although to bolster Old Sils' numbers Joe E, Tomos Jude and Ben M, and Max all volunteered to play for Old Sils as guests, which just highlights the tremendous spirit of rugby in the Stourbridge camp - well done boys!

Team Red

Sam B, Max, Rowan, George, Ben H, Fin, Ted, Henry, Joe S

Match 1

We win the toss and start the game, straight from the pass off Rowan goes on a trademark run and scores. Sils handling letting them down and a dropped ball sees Ben charge down the flanks to score. Old Sils strike back with a well timed pass putting them through to score. Finlay receives the ball from the pass off and takes them all on to score. Some very good passing work from Stour sees the ball get to George to score. Sils respond by finding a few holes in our defence to reply with a hard earned try. Stour are tagging and defending well and manage to get the ball to Henry who sets off on a good through them all run to score. HT 5-3. Stour press Sils with solid defending and eventually a spilled ball sees Henry gather and set off, he’s tagged just before the line but the one step rule sees him place the ball down to score. Sils have found their tagging improving in the last few minutes but another good run from George sees him scoring again. Sils manage to score again after some good passing play seeing them through out defence. Stour pass the ball around well Sam goes on a good run and a great lay off to the supporting Rowan sees him clean through to score. Solid tagging and defensive work from Stour push Sils wide and in to touch. The turned over ball sees Finlay break from just outside our own try line but Sils manage to tag him in the middle where a few good passes gets the ball out to Joe S who drives out wide and in to the corner to score.

Score Stour 9 – Old Sils 4

Match 2

Stour start the game well with Rowan running at Sils, but a well organised defence manage to tag Rowan who passes to George who manages to find a way through to score. Sils attack with a few good passes making head way to our goal line but a solid 7 tag defending line especially by Rowan and Joe see’s the ball turned over to Stour. The ball is passed of to Rowan who runs from deep in his own half to score a well deserved try. Sils pull 2 tries back before the half time break with some very good passing moves managing to pull our defence out of shape to find ways through. HT 2-2. With the game well poised for a good second half Sils attack well and take the lead for the first time and then manage to exploit a few Stour handling mistakes to score again. This must have kicked started Stour and a fantastic run from Rowan pulls a try back. Sils pass the ball around well must a dropped pass is picked up by Finlay and after some good footwork and running plays a good ball to George to score and get Stour back level. Sils are playing well as a team and Ben M on loan from Stour (to make up the numbers) has slotted in well and been playing some good rugby with his handling and passing. He gets his reward by scoring a try for Sils to take them into the lead. Stour now on the back foot battle forward the ball breaks to George to score his third try and level the game. Sils push hard and peg Stour back some more great defensive tagging keeps things locked tight and after a few tense moments Finlay goes on a great run and is caught 5 yards from the line but a well laid off pass to the supporting Rowan sets him clean through to score his third and Stour take the lead. With time running out Sils attack hard and sees a few lads go down in a pile but play is allowed to continue Sils get to within a few yards of our line but a forward pass leads gives the ball to Stour and the game ends with the coaches tending to players on the ground.

Score Stour 6 – Old Sils 5

Team Green

Will A, Thomas G, Aidan, Alex, Ben M, Laurie, Cameron, Will T, James

Two winning games played, a 7-5 victory and 9-5 victory. Fantastic attacking rugby from Aiden, who lead the line in both games with 4 tries in each! Super defensive display too to show that recent training [playing tails] has improved the defensive performance over recent weeks.

Bromsgrove Prep School

This additional pre-Christmas fixture was arranged by our coach Gareth Jones, senior sports master at this impressive local prep school. With pre-match food and drink laid on it was a sure-fire winner with parents as well as players.

A large turnout from both sides saw two teams from Stour battling it out against two teams from Bromsgrove Prep. Four matches were played in total.

Team 1

Cameron, Sam, Thomas G, Ted, Fin, Rowan, Joe E, Will A

Game 1 was a real end to end attacking display. With time played a little longer than usual [10 minutes each way] scores were still much higher than expected and at times it was like watching a basketball match. Never more than one try in it the final score ended 11-11. Rowan and Thomas G lead the scoring with 4 each, well supported by Cameron [2] and Fin.

A fantastic game when even defences played well, but the running quality and support from all players was superb.

Game 2

Another very tight game, ending with a 7-5 victory for Stour with Rowan again leading with 4 mazy tries, supported by Sam, Will T and Thomas.

Tries : Cameron [2], Sam, Thomas G [5], Fin, Rowan [8], Will T

Team 2

Aidan, Ben H, Laurie, James, Tomos J, Joe S, Max, Ben M

Another two high scoring games saw 1 draw and a defeat.

A guard of honour by both teams for the main event, Bromsgrove vs King Edwards followed a presentation by Gareth to the Stour players and really topped off this super afternoon.

Stour would like to thank Gareth for arranging the event, and his colleagues for refereeing the match and providing catering.

And thanks to Bromsgrove Prep for proving to be such good, sporting opposition.
